[db] and natural*designs were called in to produce a catalogue cd-rom for the prestigious 2003 cambridge student art exhibition.
the exhibition featured over a hundred pieces presented in the brute space of an unused warehouse in the middle of cambridge. the pieces were hung from girders, and variously pinned and nailed to the walls. illumination was provided by home security lights.
given only two days to complete the catalogue (and with some of the material for the catalogue arriving with us only hours before the deadline), there was little time to plan, and even less to finesse and finish - we knew that what we laid down first would be what the final user would experience.
we aimed to create an experimental and exploratory interface and structure to match the content of the exhibition. in the end, we found it wasn't just the catalogue which was exploratory - the process of creation was an equally experimental and rewarding experience.
the catalogue was put on display at the opening party, and received an extremely warm welcome. after the success of the opening night, we were asked to add a new section about the party, also featuring the some of the comments of the artists themselves, before the cd was distributed with sellout success.
